Title
ebXML Standard

Source from The Electronic Times, Korea. (Monday, May 26, 2003)

As ebXML received recognition as next generation e-commerce standard from UN there is great interest in timing of commercialization and proliferation. So far although UN has been pursuing standardization through UN/CEFACT it ostponed approval citing lack of standard system. However with recent approval, there will be active discussion about standardization.

¡Þ Commercialization= Experts do not see eye to eye on this but it will at least take more than 2 years for commercialization. This is because still ebXML is in the test stage. Chae, Kyoung-soo, researcher of Korean Agency for Technology & Standards (KATS), said, "As a few nations including US are working on projects at govenment level to support ebXML framework. Commercialization could be possible as early as the latter half of next year." Jang, Jae-kyoung, team leader of Korea Institute for Electronic Commerce (KIEC), said, "Preparation is almost complete. However, it will take another 3 to 5 years because it needs development of related solutions." Kim, Sun-ho, professor of Myoung Ji University, also said, "Commercial application will need 4 to 5 years."

¡Þ Development in Korea=There are 5 companies developing solutions based on ebXML standard including POSDATA, Samsung SDS, KTNET, Inno Digital and Hanmak Infotek. However, they are developing separate solutions based on differstand standard as well. POSDATA developed BizBinder BSI for steel industry application. Next month the company will supply it to DAE KYEONG SPECIAL STEEL and 10 affiliates. Inno Digital released 'Solme B2Bi Suite' based on ebXML last June and plans to supply them to Kiup Bank and 10 insurance companies. Samsung SDS developed 'Bizentro' adopting Rosetta Net standard and KTNET adopted ebXML for protocol of Internet-based message processing service 'GXML Hub'. Hanmak Infotek is developing publishing distribution system based on ebXML together with LG CNS.

¡Þ Future Prospect= According to analysis of experts, ebXML is highly likely to establish as standard. Professor Kim Sun-ho anticipated that "It is highly likely as EDI became standard by UN. However it will coexist with Rosetta Net as well." There is different opinion as well. One industry official said, "ebXML should be able to provide remarkable advantages compared to other standard for industry adoption. Simple universality and UN effort to make it standard is meaningless."
